No OHIP? No Problem!

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan, known more commonly as OHIP, is the health insurance plan run by the provincial government but not everyone is eligible for coverage. What if you aren’t eligible for government-funded healthcare? Depending on your immigration status, for example, you may not have health coverage. If you are a foreign worker, foreign student, if you have started the immigration process but don’t yet have insurance coverage, if you are a tourist or a visitor to Ontario (Canadian or otherwise), you don’t have OHIP coverage. These are just some of the examples of those who aren’t eligible for OHIP coverage. This article is for you!

Unlike private health insurance, OHIP is government-run and funded. Those who are eligible for OHIP coverage may apply for their own Health Card with the Ministry of Health. With the government’s current backlog of applications, there can be a waiting period for OHIP coverage and a waiting period to receive your Health Card.
